USAC INDIANA SPRINT WEEK REVIEW: SEAVEY AUTHORS MORE HISTORY IN 2024

By: Richie Murray – USAC Media

Speedway, Indiana (August 7, 2024)………It certainly wasn’t the way either Logan Seavey or Abacus Racing envisioned closing out their quest for a championship during the 37th annual edition of NOS Energy Drink USAC Indiana Sprint Week Presented By Honest Abe Roofing.

After running roughshod over the field throughout the first six events by garnering three feature wins (Lincoln Park, Lawrenceburg & Circle City), plus a second at Kokomo, a third at Tri-State and a fourth at Terre Haute, Seavey’s only task left to achieve in the finale at Bloomington was to finish 18th or better to clinch the title. However, that turned out to be the most arduous challenge of the week.

While running third with 20 laps to go, Seavey snagged the turn four cushion and tumbled over the banking, resulting in extensive front end damage to his Abacus Racing/Honest Abe Roofing – Rockwell Security – Indy Custom Stone/DRC/Stanton Chevy. During the ensuing red flag period, a massive community of teams came together to assist the Abacus Racing crew on their repairs. When all was said and done, repairs were made and Seavey returned to the track, albeit at the back of the field.

Seavey’s 15th place result at Bloomington was, by far, their least ideal result of the week. But in the end, it was good enough to secure the bag, earning a 13-point advantage in the final ISW standings tally to add another accolade to his ever growing list. In doing so, Seavey became just the second driver to win both the Indiana Sprint Week and Indiana Midget Week title in his career, joining Bryan Clauson in that regard.

In what is their first year together as a sprint car team, Seavey and Abacus continue to re-write the record books at seemingly every turn. Their third win of ISW at Circle City brought their USAC National Sprint Car season win total to 13, already the second most ever in a single season behind Tom Bigelow’s all-time mark of 14 in 1977.

Seavey’s total earnings throughout Indiana Sprint Week 2024 equaled $42,575. Furthermore, the top-eight in the final Indiana Sprint Week standings received point fund money: Brady Bacon ($4,000), Kyle Cummins ($2,500), Daison Pursley ($2,000), Mitchel Moles ($1,750), Briggs Danner ($1,500), Kevin Thomas Jr. ($1,250) and Robert Ballou ($1,000) in addition to their nightly feature finishing earnings and bonuses.

For the first time since 2001, Lincoln Park Speedway served as the host of the Indiana Sprint Week opener. There, Seavey became the first driver in 39 years to capture four consecutive USAC National Sprint Car victories, a feat that had last been achieved by Rick Hood in 1985. During an early red flag period, Seavey hopped out of his car which briefly lit the vinyl on the side of the car on fire due to the exhaust, yet it wasn’t enough to keep him away from driving to victory lane.

Twenty-four hours prior to round two of ISW at Kokomo, second place finisher Kyle Cummins called his shot over the Lincoln Park Speedway public address system, stating, “I told (my crew) that if we can be top-five tonight, we’re going to win at Kokomo.” Channeling his inner Joe Namath, Babe Ruth and even George Zimmer of Men’s Wearhouse fame, Cummins made a guarantee and backed up his declaration when the time came to deliver in a frenzied run through lapped traffic to win by a single car length, his first win for the new Petty Performance Racing team, while just narrowly ending Seavey’s bid to become the first driver since Larry Dickson in 1968 to win five consecutive USAC National Sprint Car features.

The third round of ISW at Lawrenceburg was pushed from Sunday to Tuesday due to Mother Nature. Rolling off 11th, Seavey picked his way through the pack to take over the lead just after the halfway mark before briefly losing the top spot on a late restart only to regain it back once and for all – all while enduring a vibration from a mud-packed right rear wheel, mind you – to win an ISW race from the deepest starting position since Shane Cottle five years earlier in 2019. Seavey also became the first driver to win both the semi and the feature in a single night of USAC National Sprint Car competition since February of 2020! Furthermore, the seven lead changes were tied for the most ever in an Indiana Sprint Week feature, equaling Lincoln Park (2001), Bloomington (2016) and Kokomo (2022).

The following night at Circle City, Seavey entered rarefied air to become just one of three drivers to achieve at least 13 wins during a single USAC National Sprint Car season, joining Tom Bigelow (14 in 1977), J.J. Yeley (13 in 2003) and Robert Ballou (13 in 2015). Overall, it was his sixth win in his past seven series starts. But in this one, he had to fight back after losing the lead late, retaking the lead from Kevin Thomas Jr. with seven laps to go en route to victory, thus becoming the first driver since himself in 2021 to capture three of the first four rounds of ISW.

Brady Bacon tamed the beast that is Terre Haute’s half-mile dirt oval once more after rain deluged the surface throughout the afternoon, requiring a yeoman’s effort from promoter Joe Spiker and his crew to get the event in. Perhaps the most stunning tidbit to emerge is the fact that it had been more than three seasons since Bacon had found victory lane during an Indiana Sprint Week feature. Meanwhile, many of the fans’ eyes were affixed to Robert Ballou, who, due to a mechanical issue prior to the green flag, had to start at the tail, then proceeded to use the extreme high line to advance from 24th to 5th.

For Justin Grant, months and months of frustration led up to the penultimate round of ISW at Tri-State. The root of the consternation was evident in the results. Entering the night, Grant had endured a 16-race stretch that produced no wins and an uncharacteristic average finish of 11th. Furthermore, throughout his first five ISW starts, Grant had drudged through with an average finish of 18th. Two laps after seemingly seeing his chance at winning going by the wayside, Grant fought his way back past Mitchel Moles, then was forced to fend off his repeated attacks down the stretch to reach ISW victory lane for the 10th time in his career, which ranks fourth all-time.

After Bloomington’s traditional Friday night date was washed away by rain after two of the four heat races were completed, the red clay became the host of Sunday’s ISW finale. One year earlier, Bloomington very nearly became the home of Briggs Danner’s first career USAC National Sprint Car after leading the initial 14 laps and finishing second. Close but no cigar had become an unwanted mantra for the team throughout the week. Yet, in the end, Danner broke through to become the first Pennsylvanian to win an Indiana Sprint Week feature in the 37-year history of the series which dates back to 1988.

Furthermore, Kevin Thomas Jr. passed 58 cars throughout the course of the seven-race Indiana Sprint Week series, which earned KTJ top honors as the Indiana Sprint Week ProSource Passing Master. Most notably, after a qualifying crash at Tri-State, his Rock Steady team rolled out a backup car and Thomas drove it from 20th to 3rd in the semi and from 24th to 7th in the feature.

Ninety-four drivers participated in Indiana Sprint Week 2024 with drivers hailing from 14 different United States: Indiana (48), California (11), Illinois (6), Arizona (5), Ohio (5), Oklahoma (3), Texas (3), Kentucky (2), Missouri (2), Pennsylvania (2), Alabama (1), Colorado (1), Kansas (1) and Washington (1), plus three more from Australia: Victoria (2) and New South Wales (1).

Twelve drivers started all seven feature events. Only nine of those drivers started every feature without the aid of a provisional: Brady Bacon, Kyle Cummins, Briggs Danner, Justin Grant, C.J. Leary, Mitchel Moles, Daison Pursley, Logan Seavey and Kevin Thomas Jr.

Several drivers earned their best career USAC National Sprint Car finishes during Indiana Sprint Week. The most notable among them was Rylan Gray (Greenfield, Ind.). Entering the Bloomington finale, Gray’s best career USAC National Sprint Car feature finish had been 12th. On this night, he brought home a career best result of 5th.

A pair of wild accidents kicked off ISW at Lincoln Park with both drivers walking away. On the seventh lap of the feature, Kale Drake, making his USAC National Sprint Car debut, ramped over the right rear wheel of another car entering turn one. From there, Drake burst through the turn one fence and billboards before landing upside down in the parking lot, nestled between several spectators’ vehicles.

Later in that same race, a frightening scene developed on the back straightaway on the final lap as ninth running Stevie Sussex's car burst into flames. Sussex promptly jumped out of the car fully engulfed in fire. He stopped, dropped and rolled through the infield for several yards until he was met by the safety crew who quickly extinguished the flames. In time, Sussex was back on his feet and walked to the ambulance under his own power. Throughout much of the remainder of the week, Sussex was seen in the pits and watching the races as a spectator.

Furthermore, for the first time since 2016, three new teams won their first ever Indiana Sprint Week feature: Abacus Racing, Petty Performance Racing and Hogue Racing Enterprises.
