years in wife's death From wire dispatches NORFOLK A Navy cook who police said confessed to murdering his wife because she was pregnant by another man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison. Circuit Judge Jerome James handed down the maximum sentence Tuesday for second-degree murder against Craig Snider, 29. Snider, who was convicted in March, sneaked off the Little Creek Amphibious Base and strangled his wife, according to testimony. He returned to the base in time to prepare a 5 a.m. breakfast and finish his 24- hour shift.
Snider retured to his home, where he had left his 4-year-old son with his dead mother, and told a neighbor that his wife Lee Anne, 23, was unconscious. An autopsy showed the woman was murdered and Snider, 29, confessed to the crime. He told police he went into a rage after his wife told him she was having an affair and was pregnant with another man's child. During sentencing, Snider's mother, a minister and a family friend testified he was a loving, giving and caring husband and father. But James told them, "Giving and loving fathers don't kill the mother." Sally Wolfgang, the victim's mother, testified Tuesday that her 4-yearold grandson told her he remembers seeing his father choking his mother.
"He wants to kill his father," Ms. Wolfgang said. The boy now lives with Ms. Wolfgang and is under psychiatric care. WALLEN Mrs.

Aegis data expected to be sent to Dahlgren DAHLGREN (AP) Some of the data collected by a team of Pentagon investigators looking into why an American warship shot down an Iranian airliner may be headed for the Naval Surface Warfare Center, where the Aegis weapons system aboard the Navy vessel was developed.
The Aegis, hailed when it came out as the most advanced guidance and combat system in the world, has come into question for its role in last weekend's downing of the Airbus. All 290 people aboard the plane were killed when the cruiser Vincennes launched a missile attack on the civilian craft as it approached the ship in the Persian Gulf. The Dahlgren center is where the Aegis and its computer software are improved. Capt. Carl A.
Anderson, who turned over command of the center last week, would not comment on the shooting incident, but he reiterated his praise for the Aegis. "It looks like to me that the system worked well," Anderson said. The six-member team investigating the incident does not include any Dahlgren personnel, according to Diane Palermo, a public affairs officer. It provides jobs for about 400 civil servants and more than 100 contract employees on a $50 million annual budget. There are 11 Ticonderoga-class cruisers with Aegis capabilities and the Navy has plans for 16 more over the next five years.
