Michael Preston Gobert, born on February 14, 1949, in the city of San Antonio, Texas, he lived a life full of love, dedication, and service until his passing on August 8, 2024. His journey was one marked by deep devotion to his family, faith, and community, leaving a lasting legacy that will be cherished by all who knew him.
Michael was the beloved son of Irvin Gobert and Shirley Mae Gobert, who nurtured him with love and values that would shape the man he would become. From an early age, Michael displayed a strong sense of responsibility and care for those around him, qualities that only grew stronger as he matured. He carried the love and teachings of his parents throughout his life, always striving to honor their memory through his actions and relationships.
On December 26, 1970, Michael married the love of his life, Judy Celestin, a union that would become the cornerstone of his life. Their marriage was a testament to enduring love and partnership, a bond that was only strengthened by the arrival of their four children. Michael was a devoted father to Matthew, Miguel, Mario, and Malai, and he found immense joy and pride in watching them grow and flourish. He was a constant source of support and guidance, always ready with a kind or not so kindword, a piece of advice, or simply a listening ear.
Michael's faith was a guiding force in his life. Baptized as a young teenager, he embraced his spiritual journey with fervor and dedication. His commitment to his faith led him to serve as a regular pioneer in Opelousas, Louisiana, where he devoted countless hours to helping others and deepening his own spiritual growth. Michael's faith was not just a private matter; it was a beacon that guided his interactions with others, shining through in his kindness, generosity, and unwavering sense of justice.
Beyond his faith and family, Michael had a profound love for reading and sports, passions that brought him immense joythroughout his life. He was an avid reader, always eager to expand his knowledge and understanding of the world. But it was in the realm of sports that Michael's enthusiasm truly shone. He was a dedicated fan of the Dallas Cowboys, following their triumphs and tribulations with unflagging loyalty. Basketball, too, held a special place in his heart, and for over 30 years, Michael shared his love of the game as a referee. In this role, he embodied the spirit of sportsmanship, fairness, and dedication, earning the respect and admiration of players, coaches, and fellow referees alike.
Michael's life was richly blessed, not only with the love of his immediate family but also with the joy of being a grandfather to twelve grandchildren: Stephany (and her husband Richard), Tysionna, Sapphire, Miguel II, Matthew II, Kane, Mario Jr., Deandre, Meaira, Marquel, Chris, Paislynn, Paige and Micah. He reveled in his role as a grandfather, delighting in the energy and promise of the next generation. Michael's love extended even further, as he was also a great-grandfather to Arrius, Chole, and Gabrielle, each of whom brought an extra layer of happiness to his life.
Throughout his life, Michael was the embodiment of a family man. His warmth, love, and unwavering commitment to his family were the pillars upon which he built his life. He was always there for family gatherings, celebrations, and quiet moments, offering his support and love with open arms. His home was a place of refuge, laughter, and love, where his family and friends could always find a listening ear and a heart full of compassion.
As we remember Michael, we also acknowledge the pain of his loss. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Marchelle, his brother Maurice, and his beloved grandson Michael Christian Gobert. While their absence is deeply felt, we find comfort in knowing that Michael is at peace.
Michael Preston Gobert leaves behind a legacy of love, faith, and dedication that will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of knowing him. He is survived by his loving wife Judy, his cherished children Matthew (and his wife Shaya), Miguel (and his partner Amanda), Mario (and his wife Destiny), and Malai, as well as his adoring grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Each of them carries a piece of Michael's spirit, a testament to the love and joy he brought into their lives.
Though he is no longer with us, Michael's memory will live on in the hearts of his family and friends. His life was a testament to the power of love, the strength of faith, and the importance of family. May he rest in peace, forever remembered, and forever loved.
